We Come In at the Cover Stage

Environmentaldirectory works on drywall in Riverside, and the work we care most about is the board stage of a room addition. We are on Brockton Ave in the 92509 ZIP.

An addition is a small building attached to a larger one. It gets framed, wired, plumbed, insulated and inspected, and then one crew arrives and covers all of it. That crew is us, and the reason we treat the job as a specialty rather than general drywall is that everything before us becomes hard to reach the moment the first sheet goes on a wall.

The Order Is the Job

Most of what goes wrong on addition drywall is a scheduling failure rather than a craft failure. Board hung before the rough trades have their sign off is the classic one. The inspector never saw the wiring, so he is entitled to ask you to open the wall, and you pay for the same square footage twice plus the tape and the texture on top.

We keep our own note of where a job is in the permit sequence and we would rather push our start date by four days than hang into an unsigned inspection. That is not caution for its own sake. It is the cheapest decision available on the whole job.

The Join Is the Other Half

Everything inside a new addition is straightforward. The interesting part is where the new room meets the house that was already there.

Two structures built decades apart do not move together. Slab-on-grade tract construction here settles on its own schedule, and the tie between an old slab and a new one is rarely as continuous as the framing inside either. Tape a rigid joint straight across that line and you have written yourself a crack, usually visible by the end of the first hot summer.

We detail that transition on purpose, and we say up front which approach we are using and why.

Texture, and Riverside Light

The second thing people notice is texture. Orange peel and knockdown are not single settings, they are a family of results that shift with nozzle size, air pressure, mud consistency and the number of seconds a knockdown pass is allowed to skin before it is flattened.

Matching yours means spraying scrap, holding it against your existing wall, and looking at it in the same light the finished room will get. West facing rooms in this city take a hard low sun for hours, and that light finds a mismatch that looks perfect at midday.
